My Site Sucks

i usually don’t pay much attention to site stats and whatnot, but earlier my buddy jeff and i were talking about some webshit – and according to compete.com, my site’s traffic has totally gone into the shitter over the last year. *blink*

not sure why or what the difference is… feel like i’ve been blogging pretty much the same way for quite awhile now, sure sometimes i blog more often but i doubt that’s the reason… is it the material? more babes? less? news? videos? …or maybe it’s this current blog design i slapped together awhile back?

hell man, i have no idea.

i’ve had my blog around for a long time now, so doubt i’ll drop it anytime soon… but seriously, kinda took me by surprise… how fucking depressing.

i need a guinness.

  1. Probably because you were mentioned in Smashing and some other sites for your designs… Then over time just started losing people…. Hell I know I’ve been coming here for years and nothings changed except the designs haha

  2. hmmm, think Smashing gave me that much of a bump, then?

again, not that i really care, but just had me wondering what’s different, y’know?

kinda crazy to think of ya coming here for years now. lol

  3. I would never turn down more babes.. haha. I like the current design. I doubt that’s the reason. Who knows though. The web is full of finicky peeps. Another thing you might consider if it’s not included in that graphic is people might be using things like Google Reader. I use it to view about 70% of your posts but still pop open the site every few days to check the babes page and to see if I missed anything.

  4. I would never have thought about it if AWK hadn’t mentioned it, but I think an early feature in SM was the reason I first came over. The content has kept me coming back since then. I only recently remembered because you started tweeting (i.e. this clickthrough).

    Keep on keepin’ on.

And hey man: it’s just right for me – i’ll be back!

  6. I’d say that they’ve change their methods (perhaps collection points) in some way. I looked up a few sites that I manage where I know the real traffic numbers, and it shows similar decreases when I know that traffic has either remained flat or increased.

  7. Always been here… always will be. FWIW, I think blogging has taken a big hit over the past couple of years with integrated social sites (read: Facebook). Who needs a blog when you can just get a “Page” and spam all your followers non-stop. Luckily, it seems as though the tide is turning (gut feeling from people I talk to; no data to back that up). I recently went back to very simple photoblogging. A daily shot (of little consequence, I might add) every day.

But like I said, we luvs ya mang. The babes, the designs, the videos, and all that shiz. It’s still good :) (Maybe a little more gaming :P)

  8. Two reasons; I think you’ve reached that “cult of fo0” point where the readership are the folks who like your writing style and content. The smashing lot were looking for how-to’s and give-aways… which is the second part – I discovered your site back in the day cause you were talking more design/ui/ux stuff and since our lives move on, we all get busier, this has changed to other subject matter – not that it’s the wrong thing but it has caused polarisation of traffic – ie you either like the cut of the fo0 Jib or you don’t.

I am available for weddings and children’s parties, btw.

  9. TLDR; your readers tend to be a core set; your content has changed over time and so the readership shapes accordingly.

  10. The site design is great, and its pretty cool that your into changing it from time to time. I think as others have pointed out, blogging and changed but you have a solid core set of readers.

I do like the BvB sets.

  11. y’know, it’s kind of funny to look back and some of my earlier posts — versus now… but you’re right, 10 years is a long time and people change… i know i sure have.

as well as putting on a few pounds somewhere along the way. ugh.

but i’m glad i posted this – i was curious what ya guys thought *thumbs up*

  12. been reading your site since well … forever. I’m sure I came here from some ColdFusion posts originally? Though tbh I read 50-70% straight from Google Reader so I’m guessing you’re missing some hits from that?

    Keep it up though!

  13. I do remember a time where you had more design talk, and your site look and feel before was featured more heavily in some of the CSS sites (I believe CSS beauty if not a similar showcase). So your look has changed, a little more toned down, and the tech talk has changed as well.

That aside, I’d have to agree it’s largely social media and new tech. I almost never talk on blogs anymore (oddly more here then I typically have before), and I barely visit- all rss and instapaper, Which maybe hard to track too!

  15. Smashing brought me over to ya about 18 mths ago. It was because of a groovy design. But I love the content, but also the commentary. You put things out their FoO and make it two way. You get us to vote, you ask us what we think, we can leave comments without an account, and you respond to our comments. I reckon their is a little emotional ‘ka-ching’ every time we visit.

So keep it up mate. Personally, I’d be stoked if I got around 20000 hits a month for my own blog. You’re certainly in peoples’ heads.

  16. Foo, I came to your site about 5 years ago. I liked that you used to always change the design. I liked the BvB, voting, comments, and that you posted content I don’t find on any of the other sites I frequent.

It’s still true, except for the sweet designs. Grey is boring, but let’s not go pink.

  17. kinda the same thing as everyone else here… you were featured on a bunch of css site galleries so I’m guessing thats where most of your traffic came from.

  18. Foo, my man Dan – a full on computer design guy – turned me on to your site back in 2005 when we were both in Iraq. I still pop by to visit just about every day. You’re doing everything right, people are just fickle.

  20. I have been following you since back when when you used to post comments on webwizguides forums when I was first leaning asp and you site is the first site I visit everyday. I have it pinned in Chrome. Maybe you should write a couple of tuts and get them listed on some of the big sites. I know you have something to teach us all. Keep it up!! My mornings would not be the same without forgetfoo.com.

  22. foo, i used to visit your site alot, i don’t anymore. i am glad to see the content is as good and diverse as before.

reasons that come to mind on why your traffic is down:

    – site is designed for big monitors, heading font and general spacing could scale. too much scrolling, i liked the simple menu on the left and every design before that. since then you’ve been going huge, probably because of your monitor size.

    – you could try another design refresh, you love experimenting with this site, and resubmit to design showcase sites

    – check if your comment count is lower as well…

    – more babes/left or right?

know what i miss? alphafilter.com but nevermind that, bring back designduel.com, that shit was bomb, i know it may not have been yours but there’s my two cents.

I think what Houser said is dead on, between Twitter, FB and the like, blogs seem to be more passe’…not that I agree at all. Been thinking about starting another shot at a true blue web design blog…mainly to document a bunch of crap that I’ve been working on…

But as usual, keep up the good work!

  41. thanks for all the kind words guys, i really appreciate it – fuck the traffic, i’ll just keep on doing what i’ve been doing, and blog various bits that catch my attention or interest at any given moment.

make some good points about google reader/RSS feeds – funny, but i tend to still use RSS alot as well, though people keep telling me that RSS is dead and that it’s all about twitter now. go figure. *shrugs*

also good point about FB and the social networks, and the slow demise of the “blog” – i’ve often wondered about that, but figure deep down that blogs aren’t gonna just die because FB is so popular… dunno, just a gut feeling really.

  50. I’ve been an avid visitor since I discovered your site back in 2002’sh (This far back http://www.forgetfoo.com/images/blog/digipix002.jpg) when you still drove a GTI? I was blown away by the dHTML and numerous site designs (fooSkinz and fooDesktop) and it seems to me most of your traffic is from Loyal Repeat Visitors.

Some of the veterans I remember are Houser, T’Dawg, Jes, Ben, Blanco among others.

Why I became a loyal fan.
    1. The DHTML experiments
Everyday when I woke up, I’d start by checking my email then forgetfoo.com. Why? You used to pull some crazy dHTML that engaged us in an emotional level and made us go, “OMFG that is incredible!! How the hell did he do that?”

    2. The Frequent Site Redesigns
You rolled out new designs (fooSkinz) so often and each time you out-did yourself. Just when we thought your previous design was awesome, you came up with something even more Awesomer! Just like Apple today and this amazing feat of creativity was a traffic magnet and a foundation for Loyal Fan base. Even your forum had it’s own unique fo0 flare.

    3. News
Sure, Slashdot existed then Digg came along but forgetfoo.com was still my preferred choice and it felt more “home”.

    4. The Babes
    Nuff Sed.

    What Changed?
Well life happens and we understand you got a different Job, replaced the GTI, and may not have as much time to tinker around with the site as much but we’re still here – and as always, looking forward to a new blog posts – esp one that’s titled, “New Foo Design” (and BvB)

  56. I been coming here since 07, found your site I think when googling about Halo 3 or something like that. Still a daily visit from me here!

Personally I miss your old website from years ago, you had just one blog and then the topics on the side. I’m not crazy about the page filled with like 5+ blog post and then a next page, I would rather be able to go through them organized. Plus it was unique, alot of typical wordpress blogs are one page. Yours was custom and completely different, I liked that. Also don’t like the comments on the side, like the original way better when they were on the bottom and had more space. But I give you credit for changing things around once in a while, something I fail to do on my own sites!!

Oh and topic choice, I agree LESS POLITICS. How about once a month? lol Something you seem to post far less of these days is BvB as well, those used to come around very often if I remember right! Also could go for some more gaming news, thats how I found your site. Just giving my honest opinions.

  57. I first came to the site years ago when searching Google for some js modal dialog examples and have been coming here ever since. I like what you post and find it fun and a break from the norm. I like the design changes, but I have been using Google Reader on my iPhone lately so I don’t really see the site much anymore.
